Airtricity Update – The Facts

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

I guess it was only a matter of time but after my post on Friday the story was covered offline in the Sunday Business Post and online on Soapbox Ireland, Office of Inadequate Security, ValueIreland, Brand Ireland and of course mulley.net.

What at first looked like a progressive step by Airtricity in engaging with the online community on this issue seems to have been no more than a cursory attempt to quell any chitchat among the blogging community in relation to the data breach. Funny that the engagement only came after the SBP ran the story.

Anyway, it looks Peter Lord or at least his IP has become a regular AGH reader so here are a few new facts you can add to your list. AGH is now on page one, position ten in the organic Google search results for the key word ‘Airtricity’ and the the Airtricity Letter has been downloaded times from AGH.

When is a Legal Threat not a Legal Threat?

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

When it’s a bit of “friendly” advice! I may have been a little hasty when referring to the rocket I got on Friday as a legal threat. Looking at it again (and again) and having got “legalâ€? advice (I passed it by one of my “legal” mates) it was more advisory in tone. It was the officialdom that probably got my back up so I went off on one when in actuality the email was simply “advisingâ€? me not to liable anyone. I’m happy enough to park her there but ill wait for the official response.

A culchie with culture!!

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

AGH makes the Indo……for the right reasons!

Didnt even realise i made the blog digest on the Indo back in September.
Marie Boran writes

“It is hard to sum up this blog in just a few words or even explain its exact purpose but I will tell you this much: it is sometimes written as Gaeilge, it often champions Irish culture and it is frequently hilarious.

I really liked the blog’s strange mix of hip and hip replacement, like a culchie with culture (this is how I like to think of myself!).

I could see myself glued to this blog if I were off in Australia or America finding my fortune. Actually, I’d visit it either way. ”

Well it’s like that old saying goes…”Give a culchie the culture section, and you’ve occupied him for a day. Teach a culchie how to blog, and you’ve occupied him for life.”

Marie a chailin once ive figured out AGH’s purpose you’ll be the first to know.

AGH – Legal Threat

Friday, January 30th, 2009

So much for free speech!! It looks like we’ve touched a nerve with someone in relation to our post this morning. I received an email this morning (which i only picked up now) from a major corporate law firm, here in Dublin. Lets be clear on this I haven’t done anything wrong, I have simply published a letter which was received by a family member. I refuse to be bullied or censored on this and I will not under any circumstances remove my blog post.

I’ve been blogging since 2005 and AGH has been up and running since 2006. We’ve sailed close to the wind on a number of occasions but this goes beyond all that… ive done nothing wrong and i stand by my post. I actually held back on information truth be known…

Airtricity – Customer Data Compromised!!

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Airtricity

I’m amazed that this hasn’t been picked up in the media yet, but this came through the door of a relation last week and to say she was shocked and worried is an understatement. I mean it looks like her personal data, including bank details may have been left in an unsecured location for God knows how long!!

The letter states that while they were working on their website a “file” containing personal details was inadvertently left in an unsecure location. They go on to say that while the file was not visible on the face of the website they cant guarantee 100% that the file wasn’t accessed by an unauthorised 3rd party.

While the letter itself is very apologetic and and goes to great pains to try and reassure the recipient that this breach has been investigated thoroughly and that measures are now in place to ensure the situation can not be repeated, it doesn’t state when this breach happened and how long the data was exposed to the world.

The fraud protection cover they offer by way of apology is akin to padlocking the stable door after the horse has bolted.

I’m going to look into this for her and my first port of call will be the data protection commissioner. Come to think of it im not sure what good contacting the DPC will do, given the fact that they had their own leak recently any action they take against Airtricity might smack of hypocrisy!

I can only imagine the phone conversation:
> Hello
- Yes
> Is that Kettel?
- Yes this is Kettel
> This is pot
- Ok
> You’re Black

Language Hater Off To The Front

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Gaza 2009
Looks like AGH’s favourite language hater is so busy fighting the good fight that he didn’t have time even to renew his domain.

That’s the cunt, five in from the left.

Thought it was worth dusting this one off again.

As promised, you can now view all of AGH’s stats by accessing my AGH analytics profile using the details below.

http://www.google.com/analytics/

password: aghopenblogstatsAGH

Its a fresh profile so forgive the lack of stats pre 2 days ago!! The figures are paltry enough even by AGH standards, nothing like the heady days of 06/07. Ill see if i can get some of my historical stats up on the AGH stats page.

Glasnost

In this era of blogging stats Glasnost exemplified by Mulley and Niall Harbison i too will be making my full blog stats available. Will more than likely jimmy FireStats to make my stats viewable to the public but am also considering going down the NiallH.com route of giving full access to my Google Analytics account.

Details on how to access full stats for AGH will be posted in the AGH Stats page which for now contains only standard blog page, post and comment stats.

To Blog or to Twitter?

To Blog or to Twitter

After many false dawns and promises of redesigns etc I’ve decided that things were actually pretty good as they were. Actually its been doing my nut in trying to get and modify a WP theme to a point that im happy for it to be the new face of AGH. So I’ve decided to carry on using the existing light theme for now. I had to rip out all plugins and update my WP and DB but things seem to be hanging together a bit better now. As you may have noticed some of the nifty features are no more but it was a them or better performance and load time. I’ll look at getting some of them back up and running over the next few weeks.

Thanks for sticking out the rough times people but with things a bit more settled now AGH should be back with more Where in the World Wednesdays, more Friday Caption Competitions, more Reign of Terror letters, more Dingle for your Dangle, more Sport, more gigs, more giving out..especially more giving out….

Ive also tentatively dipped my toe into the world of Twitter.
Will the AGH twitter take over from the AGH blog?
Who knows!!

AGH Goes Old School

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

AGH Goes Old School
Ach go háirithe has gone old school….as you may have noticed. I’m cleaning house and putting a new look and feel together so forgive the temporary old school look.

I need to clean up my plugins and make sure the new theme and WP version works before releasing it to you the public. So sorry again about the false dawns of the past few months but rest assured that re-design is well under way and once i’ve deployed i will be back posting like its 2006!

ROT Update #4 (RTE)

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

RTE
Less of an update, more of a recap. One of the first targets for the ROT was Radio Telefis Eireann (RTE), Ireland’s’ national broadcaster. So with ROT activity at a minimum recently i decided to go back over the early stuff. For inspiration?? maybe. For shits and giggles?? Definitely! There are 20 instalments in this series so here are some of the highlights from the ROT vs RTE campaign.

To: Complaints Dept, Subject: Six-One News
Dear RTE,

Would it be possible to move the ‘Six One’ news to a later slot, ‘Six Forty Three’ perhaps, as I rarely make it home from work before half six.

Yours in anticipation

Dear Ms. O’Connor

Thank you for your e-mail. I regret to inform you that
RTÉ has no plans to change the timing of either the Six
One or the Nine O’Clock news bulletins.

Dear Ms. O’Connor

No amount of money would induce us to spoil the
enjoyment of over 600,000 viewers, for financial
gain.

Is your remote control missing?

To: Complaints Dept, Subject: Reality TV

Dear RTE,

Any truth to the rumour that RTE’s next big celebrity reality TV show involves the of putting of Pat Kenny, Twink, Brendan o Carroll and that boob-job trollop off you’re a star into a burlap sack with 12 cats?

This is a show that I know id watch plus it would see my TV licence fee put to good use.

Yours truly,
*****

Reply > From: ****, RTÉ Information Officer

Hi *****,

Got to say that you’re first on board with that
particular rumour, but I’ll run it past the relevant
commissioning editor in case it has merit.
I’m inclined to think however, that the DSPCA might
veto cats being put in bags – burlap or otherwise.

Best regards
