An End To Mallow Station?

Mallow Mallow Next Stop Kerry Junction?
Mallow Mallow Next Stop Kerry Junction!

AGH has been made aware that an application has been put forward to Iarnród Éireann by Kerry County Council inquiring as to the possibility of changing the official name of Mallow train station to Kerry Junction.

Sources inside KCC tell us that they have been getting increasingly worried about a downturn in tourist numbers travelling to Kerry via the train network. A study carried out on behalf of KCC found that tourist intending to travel to Kerry on the train often end up in Cork by mistake! The study identified the recent ramping up of the Dublin-Cork service and the downgrading of the Dublin-Kerry service as the chief cause of this downturn. The new emphasis on the Cork service means passengers travelling to Kerry have very few direct options and more often than not have to get the Cork train with a change in Mallow for all stations to Kerry.

The study went on to identify poor quality pubic address systems on trains and Limerick Junction being in Tipperary as factors which also added to the tourist confusion. One Councillor is quoted as saying “You get off at Limerick Junction for Limerick, so why not Kerry Junction for Kerry?”, and it’s hard to argue with that logic. The Councillor went on to add “if we have to go to the people we will! …and I’m 100% sure that a majority of people here in Kerry would vote for the proposed name changeâ€?.

Such a name change would not be unique in the Irish context, Tipperary Junction becoming Limerick Junction is just one example.

It is not yet clear how this matter will play out or if Iarnród Éireann will even act on the request. One thing is clear however, that the people of Mallow and the people of Cork will not be happy.

Slowly but surely as Cork’s Footballing and Hurling abilities declined the reach of the Kingdom expanded.

Kerry CC can fewk off. This will never happen unless Cork CCs and TDs have a death wish.

There is a slight difference between Mallow and Limerick Junction in that Mallow is a substantial town and Limerick J is a few houses and a racetrack – although apparently LJ land is becoming popular with developers.

You think you’d have more understanding, do you not realise that certain sacrifices have to be made by all counties in order to benefit the greater good of our country.
The tourism industry in kerry is keeping families and industries alive and in a typically selfish cork move you won’t allow a small element of colonisation into your “republic”

  4. Minister for Tourism says:

Down through the years, Cork people have been feeding off the back of the Kerry Tourism Industry, We have been providing an income to so many families on the border. The Corcorian who has many similarites to the Mexicans, who make there way across the border to America for a better life, needs to give something back to the community they prosper in.

Both Cork and Kerry tourism will prosper by re nameing Mallow station to Kerry Junction, and I reckon its only a matter of time.
Like the Roman Empire before it, the peoples Republic of Cork is starting to dwindle.

  5. Mark Dowling says:

And in return Cork taxes have subsidised government depts decentralising to Kerry, government capital grants to Farranfore, and to Aer Arann under the PSO scheme and to the railway itself.

Meanwhile Mallow services are planned to be expanded due to demand with stops in Blarney and Blackpool.

It’s not a question of a name – are we to rename Ballybrophy, Portarlington, Kildare, Athlone and every other place there’s a junction of some kind?

  6. Mo dhuine says:

Are tourists really that stupid? Are we really that stupid to think that they are that stupid?
Anyone wanting to go by train to Kerry is told that they change a mallow, if that train is a direct to Cork City.

First Daingle Berry Uí Chac now Mala.. what next.

I was in your country last fall for a month stay. What an amzing place you guys have got but i gotta say I took a train down to kerry to play golf and I ended up in Cork City and I think it was Mallo where I forgot to change. Maybe it would be a good idea to change the name. I now you think that us “yanks” are dumber than dirt on a barn door but I run my own shoe factory and it’s succesful so surely it can’t be as simple as you make out. Where’s the harm in changing a name, change is good and you guys have got to keep up with the rest of the world

Were you tying your laces and humming the star spangled banner when the announcement on the train said all pasenger at for Kerry get on the shit train?

  10. Don in Wichita says:

Hey you guys, if you’re just going to jump down someone’s throat every time they give an opinion then it’s no wonder you can’t have peace in your country. I have no interest in being abused about my anthem so why don’t you stick a shamrock in your ass and whistle Ouron naveen.

  11. An Blácach says:

How about another Irish solution to an Irish problem? As An Daingean may well end up being called Dingle – Daingean Uí Chúis, how about Mallow – Kerry Junction? ;-)

  12. Johnny says:

How about “The Junction formerly known as Mallow but please note that if you are trying to get Kerry you should change here or else you will end up in Cork, especially if you are a tourist – Junction”

  13. CurStocaId'Bheal'gusBrog says:

    @ Donie
    Sorry it was “sarcasm”, I don’t know how you picked it up as abuse;
how did you know about RichardHead O’Wankhorne’s party trick???

ps how much dirt can a baren door acumulate in your average calender month?

  14. Don in Wichita says:

Hey man you know us American’s don’t pick up on that sarcasm stuff.

There have been conflicting reports on the accumulation of matter on barn doors but the most widely accepted belief, and this varies per season, wood type, depth of grain, age of door, level of finishing – lacquer vs paint vs fair faced, local ground conditions and finally extent and nature of use of said barn, but if one were pushed to make an observation on the level of accumultation an informed estimation would be, 2mm per square metre on the lower third, 1.5mm p sq m. on the mid third and finally .3mm p sq m on the upper third. This is very much dependant on the above mentioned factors, wind and humidity being major influences, the figures quoted have been tabulated from an average of sixteen hundred and forty three barn doors in the mid western region of the United States over a four month period.

    I hope this clarifies matters.

  15. Pete in Omaha says:

Wasn’t Rogerson invovled in some cult movement, around hallween they’d dress and eat Barn Brak

  16. Des says:

Main difference is that the train you get at Limerick Junction goes to Limerick.

The train at Kerry Junction wouldn’t actually be going to a place called Kerry but rather Rathmore, Killarney, Farranfore and Traleeeee..

One wonders how other countries manage to deal with changing trains (sarcasm).

  17. admin says:

    Not forgetting Banteer and Millstreet!

  18. Fr. Trendaetius says:

    They are in the diocese of Kerry, and would be ‘Kerrymen with hurleys‘;
